PFAS, the “forever chemicals” are everywhere, and they’re incredibly hard to remove. But what is it, why are they called “forever chemicals” and why is it so important to remove them?

 

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of synthetic chemicals found in countless industrial and consumer products from firefighting foams to non-stick coatings. They are extremely chemically stable, which means they don’t break down easily in the environment. This persistence has prompted regulators worldwide to impose increasingly strict limits on PFAS in water, making advanced filtration solutions more important than ever.

  • What are PFAS? PFAS are man-made fluorinated chemicals known for their useful properties (oil, water, heat resistance) in products like textiles, coatings, and foams.   • Why are they called “forever chemicals”? PFAS are nicknamed “forever chemicals” because their carbon–fluorine bonds are among the strongest in chemistry, making them highly resistant to natural degradation. In other words, once released into the environment, PFAS persist for decades or longer, building up in soil, water, and even living organisms. This extraordinary persistence means they remain in ecosystems indefinitely unless actively removed.
  • Why is it important to filter PFAS from water? Because PFAS don’t break down, they can contaminate drinking water supplies and gradually accumulate to harmful levels. Mounting evidence of health risks (including potential links to cancer and other adverse effects) has led to drastically tightened regulations for PFAS in drinking water. Many authorities now require ultra-low PFAS limits in water. Together, these factors make effective PFAS filtration crucial for protecting communities and meeting strict water quality standards.
